Terms and Conditions of Participation

These are the official Terms and Conditions of Participation for the ‘International Music Prize for Excellence in Composition 2011’, a worldwide composition competition. The competition is administered by the National Academy of Music, a public educational charity of the State of Colorado, and organized by the Secretariat of the International Music Prizes™ in Greece.

By entering the competition, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these rules and by the decisions of the Academy which are final in all matters relating to the competition. The Academy reserves the right to exclude any entry from the competition at any time and in its absolute discretion if the Academy has reason to believe that an entrant has breached these rules.

The competition begins March 1, 2011, and ends October 1, 2011. There is no limit to the number of entrants. Each entry consists of an original composition, an online entry form and an entry fee. The composition must be submitted in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). All entry materials must be submitted electronically through this website. Entries cannot be revised, supplemented or withdrawn after submission.

The PDF file of the composition must include the following information:

  • The composer’s name, either on the title page or on the first page of the music.
  • The title of the composition, either on the title page or on the first page of the music.
  • A copyright notice, either on the title page or on the first page of the music. The copyright notice must include three items: (1) the word ‘Copyright’ and/or the symbol ©, (2) the year the work was created, and (3) the composer’s name (e.g., Copyright © 2011 by John Doe).

The competition does not promote any particular compositional style or ideology. Composers are encouraged to experiment with any compositional style.

Entrants may submit as many entries as they wish, but each entry constitutes a separate submission and requires its own original composition, online entry form and entry fee (the ‘entry’). Entry materials will not be returned to entrants.

Entrants retain full ownership rights and all copyrights to all submitted work and all rights to its use under US and/or International Copyright Law. Entering the competition will not affect the ownership of submitted work.

By entering the competition, all entrants give to the Academy permission to post their submitted compositions on this website for general public listening or viewing purposes and to use their name, likeness, image and biographical material for the purpose of organizing and/or managing the competition, for announcing the results of the competition and for promotional and publicity purposes.

All compositions which will be posted on this website will carry the following statements:

"Copyright Statement:

The copyright of this work rests with the composer and no quotation from it or information derived from it may be published without the prior written consent of the composer."

"Fair Use of this Copyrighted Work:

Fair use is a doctrine in United States copyright law that allows limited use of this copyrighted work without requiring permission from the copyright holder, such as for criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship or research. Whenever such a copy is made it must bear on the first page of the music the copyright line which appears at the beginning of the work."

The competition is open to composers of all ages and nationalities. Minor entrants, under the legal age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence, must have a parent’s or legal guardian’s permission to participate in the competition.

By entering the competition, all entrants declare that the submitted compositions are their own unaided work, have not been submitted to any other person for advice, assistance or revision, and do not infringe on the copyright or intellectual property rights of any person or publisher in any way. If an entry is found to be a plagiarized version of an existing composition it will be disqualified.

The Academy reserves the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and/or entrant (including an entrant’s identity and address) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these official rules or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by the Academy to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.

Entries void if the Academy determines the submission to not be an original, or if the entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft or otherwise non-compliant with these official rules.

The Academy does not accept any responsibility for late or lost entries due to the Internet or postal service.

If for any reason the competition is not capable of running as planned, due to technical failures, or any other causes beyond the control of the Academy that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, or proper conduct of this competition, the Academy reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual(s) who tamper with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the competition. If the Academy elects to cancel or terminate the competition, the Academy will return the fees submitted with each entry.

Winners’ names will be available online at http://www.musicprizes.com/ after December 10, 2011. The Academy’s decision as to who the winners will be is final and binding, not subject to appeal and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard. In the event of the adjudicators deciding that no suitable entries were received for any of the prizes, then prizes may not be awarded.

Entrants agree that personal data, especially name and address, will be used by the Academy exclusively for the purposes and within the context of this competition. The data may be used by the Academy in order to verify the entrant’s identity. Entrants have the right to access, review, rectify, or cancel any personal data held by the Academy by writing to the Secretariat of the International Music Prizes™. Entrants’ street and e-mail addresses and telephone numbers will not be disclosed or made publicly available.
